Elizabeth Township lies between the shores of the Youghiogheny and Monongahela Rivers in the Southeastern
section of Allegheny County.

The Township of Elizabeth was originally formed from part of the original Township of Rostraver.  The first
permanent settlement was in the vicinity of Round Hill as early as 1772.  In 1788 Allegheny County was formed, and
Elizabeth Township, named in honor of Elizabeth Bayard, the wife of the founder of Elizabeth Village, was
incorporated as one of its original Townships.  Villages in Elizabeth Township were Boston, Greenock, Buena
Vista, Industry and Blythedale.  Later, the neighborhoods of Blaine Hill, Mt. Vernon, Victory, and Central emerged. In
1869, the Township was divided to form the Townships of Lincoln and Forward.

Elizabeth Township has a rich history.  For example, the Township participated in the Whiskey Insurrection of 1794
in that James Patterson, Samuel Nilson and several others were imprisoned by US troops in an old barn at the
mouth of Wildcat Hollow.

Elizabeth Township encompasses 23 square miles of beautiful wooded terrain where the scenery is nothing short of
spectacular.  About 14,000 people happily call Elizabeth Township home.

Elizabeth Township hosts one of the most scenic stretches of the Youghiogheny River Trial, which is part of a
recreational trail that stretches from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, MD. Over the past several years, much has been
done to make the stretch of trail passing through Elizabeth Township even more of a recreation center for families
and outdoor enthusiasts.  This includes addition of rest rooms, a boat ramp and new pavilion in Buena Vista, and a
new ballfield and playground in Blythedale.   For further information on the trail and it's amenities, please click here

Our Township continues to grow.  New development is expected to add up to 1,000 new homes over the next 5 to
10 years.  Today, we have an average home assessment value of $85,000.
